Hemp’s History in the Ancient World:

In the early 800 BC, the first utilization of hemp was recorded. According to certain references, hemp was first utilized for the purpose of poetry in a village known as ‘Taiwan.’ In the early 6000 BC, hemp was utilized as food in China. It started to be used in manufacturing textiles in 4000 BC.

By the start of 2700 BC, people recognized hemp as a powerful therapeutic substance, which was capable of treating multiple medical ailments. At the start of the new millennia, hemp was known by the entire world for its shocking properties; it appeared in Greece, Russia, China utilized hemp for making up the paper. It was used in by the textiles in the Turkestan; hemp cloth was a made in Scythia.

The Expansion of Hemp:

A substantial expansion was experienced by hemp as it entered the new millennium. Hemp rope was made in England by 100, and then it started to expand to Italy. By 570, hemp cloth was found in France, and by 890, the seed and hemp rope was found in Iceland, and it kept on expanding.

King Henry VIII of England had decreased hemp as an essential crop, and he used to put fines on those farmers who didn’t proceed towards raising it for its industrial use in 1533. In Brazil, it was brought by Angolan slaves in 1549; these slaves were permitted to proceed towards planting hemp among the sugarcane rows.

However, as people get to know about it, they started to know its importance, not in terms of manufacturing but its usefulness as a medicine as well.

In 1606, Hemp was found by North America to be an incredible ingredient that helped them manufacture clothes, papers, ropes, and other essential things. By the 1700s, farmers in the American region were required to start growing hemp as an essential crop due to the advocating factors. In the year 1840, Hemp seeds oil was used by Abraham Lincoln in order to fuel the lamps at his place. In 1916, a paper was published by USDA, in which it was demonstrated that hemp could produce 4x more times paper than a normal tree. At the early start of 1900, hemp became an excuse for deporting as well as searching the Mexican immigrants, and it was the reason behind the replacement of the term “marijuana” to “cannabis.”

In 1929, the government of the United States had approved a synthesis form of cannabis, but only to be utilized in the industry of Pharmaceutics. It was Marinol, which was produced from THC (Synthetic form) and further it obtained approval as a legal drug by the government for treating different health conditions including HIV/AIDS, vomiting during cancer, nausea, and the patients of anorexia. Even today, $150 million sales are brought by Marinol in the U.S pharmaceutical industry.

By 1990, the importation of hemp seeds and food-grade oil began by the United States for usage. In 1999, a patent was successfully filed on cannabinoids by the United States’ health and human services. At the start of 2004, a case among the industries of hemp association and DEA came forward in which the protection was asked regarding the sales of seed-based hemp foods and products for personal care in the United States. In North Dakota, the first license of hemp was provided to 2 farmers in 2007.

The former president of the United States, Barak Obama, in 2014, had signed the Farm Bill into law in which he allowed the research institutions to proceed towards starting the piloting of farming programs of hemp. Moreover, in this Farm Bill, it was clear that hemp was legally separated from marijuana, and the cultivation of industrial hemp was made legal. In 2017, approval was granted to Cannabidiol, an oral medication also known as cannabinoids, shortened for ‘CBD’ by the United States’ Food and Drug Administration.

This 2018 Bill had affirmed the farm bill of 2014 and further confirmed removing hemp and its derivations from the act of controlled substances.

Now the question is, what’s the future of Hemp?

Well, the history of hemp goes back and back to thousands of years, and we are still finding the keys to unlocking more of hemp’s potential.
